Oriental Cat
history/profile of Oriental Cat
Siamese cats originally originated from Thailand (more
precisely, from the ancient kingdom of Siam), and even described in the Book of
Cats. Oriental comes from them rather formally, indirectly. Although, on the other hand, the oriental cat retains almost all the features of regal Siamese
ancestors and carries their genes.
The breed of oriental refers to artificially bred, and even,
we can say experimental breeds. The Second World War, which played a huge role
not only in the lives of people but also in the lives of cats, very much
affected the population of Siamese cats in Britain. In order to restore the
population, as well as to obtain new patterns and color options, after the war,
many breeders decided to correct the situation.
Breeding programs in Britain included crossbreeding Russian
blue, British shorthaired and Abissinsthat gave a great variety
of new shades of wool and new drawings. As a result, after a relatively short
time, the breed was bred oriental with its features of color, but retained
almost all the characteristics of Siamese cats. This applies not only to the
structure of the body but also to internal qualities.
Moreover, at first, the breeders of Siamese breed even
organized something like opposition, not wanting to recognize orientals
(eastern shorthair), however, over time the situation has defused. In 1972, the
CFA accepted an oriental shorthair cat for registration and in 1977 it
received full championship status.
But, this is not all, as, except short hair, there are
long-haired orientals. They originated from the interbreeding of eastern
shorthair and Balinese cats. The breed was officially recognized in 1985 when
TICA registered them in the championship. They were accepted to the CFA in
February 1988. Seven years later, in 1995, the first and second combined
into one breed, calling it oriental, or oriental cat.

description of oriental shorthair cat
Oriental breed leads its ancestry from very ancient
ancestors - Siamese cats, although it is the result of artificial breeding.
This has its pros and cons, as the propensity for "family" diseases
and the uneasy nature of oriental cats are not suitable for everyone.
If for you the above nuances are not a problem and you are
ready to live with them, these pets will bring to your life a lot of bright
colors. Their inquisitive mind, activity, love towards the hosts, and
playfulness will not let you get bored. Orientals are very intelligent, they
give the impression of a living being who understands, if not all, then -
almost everything that happens and says around.
They have a thin body, disproportionately long, big ears, and
big eyes. Despite their thinness, these cats do not look too subtly, and with
good nutrition and normal activity have a graceful, but healthy muscular
appearance. At the moment there are more than 300 colors of orientals. Life
expectancy is an average of 13 years.
the personality of oriental shorthair
Because this breed carries bright features of Siamese cats she is different in mind, playful, likes to pay attention to herself, and is
somewhat selfish. Which, however, is forgivable, given the ancient history and
royal origin. These cats will not hide their emotions and will cast a voice if
they deem it necessary.
Flexible and quick-witted mind orientals come to the rescue
when you need to open the doors, climb into the closet or dig in your bag.
Their curiosity flows into playfulness, and playfulness - in curiosity, and
these two qualities are directly interconnected.
They can be offended if they feel a negative attitude or
lack of attention, imperious and demanding. On the other hand, it can more than
pay off with the kindness and affection that they are able to show towards
their loved ones. These animals are devoted, they can miss a loved one and family
members.
The nature of oriental cats cannot be called simple, they
are very playful, retain playfulness in adulthood, and are tolerant to children.
Other pets get along but can be jealous of their owners.
Common diseases in oriental longhair
Both purebred and mixed individuals can have various health
problems, including genetics. This applies to both long-haired and
short-haired orientals. They have the same diseases as Siamese cats, in
particular:
- gastrointestinal diseases are the most likely megaesophagus;
- Hyperesthesia syndrome is a neurological problem;
- Nystagmus - neurological eye disorder;
- amyloidosis;
- bronchial asthma - lung disease;
- congenital heart defects such as aortic stenosis;
- progressive eye retina atrophy (can be detected by a genetic test).
- squint;
- neurological disorders associated with lack of attention or aggression on the part of the owners - can affect the physical health of cats.
how to take care of Oriental Cat?
Since this breed has a division into shorthair and
long-haired, care, respectively, will also be different. Short-haired can be
combed once a week or even once every 2 weeks, and long-haired - 2 times a week
or out of necessity, but at least once a week.
Ears in these cats have an unusual shape and are quite large,
they tend to accumulate dirt. They need to be wiped a couple of times a week,
you can do it with a cotton swab soaked with vinegar diluted in water. Do this
very carefully, so as not to damage the inner surface of the ear.
Oriental cat is very demanding to clean its tray, and
therefore it should be kept as clean as possible. Cutting of the claws is done
once a week, eye cleansing - if necessary, usually every day. Also, do not
forget to brush your teeth at least 2-3 times a week.
Interesting Facts
- Oriental cats require a lot of attention and will meow loudly if they do not
- get it.
- Orientals can be a nuisance for cats of less active breeds, so they should be combined with other Orientals or breeds, which are known to have a lot of energy for games and activities.
- Originated in the 1950s, the oriental was selectively withdrawn from Siamese. The breed has two varieties of wool, short-haired and long-haired, both of which can appear in the litter. The long-haired breed actually has an average length of wool and is considered rare.
