History/profile of Maine Coon Cat
The Maine breed hails from Maine in the United States of
America. It is believed that these cats were descendants of domestic shorthair
cats, which interbred with the Scandinavian, brought to North America by the
Normans. Thus, the Maine Kun breed may be associated with a Norwegian forest
cat.
The origin of the breed is unknown - there are only
assumptions and legends.
- The Maine breed was bred after mating a cat and a female raccoon. In evidence of this, the external features - the color of the tail, which is similar to the tail of a raccoon;
- another legend mentions that the cats originally belonged to Marie Antoinette and were smuggled in by boat bound for America;
