Munchkin Cat
History/Profile of Munchkin Cat
History says that the modern kitty Munchkin was discovered
by accident in 1983. Sandra Hocheweek, a Louisiana music teacher, rescued a
supposedly homeless, definitely pregnant short-haired cat from the streets of
Rayville, Louisiana.
She called it Blackberry. This cat has a kitten, named Toulouse.
Later his offspring led to the appearance of the munchkin breed.
The breed was first shown at the 1991 cat show. The cat
caused a lot of controversies, and many critics assumed that he would develop
problems with paws and backs, similar to those inherent in some types of the dachshund.
Officially, the breed was recognized by the International
Association of Cats in 2003, although some registries do not recognize it until
now.

Munchkin is a relatively new breed known for its very short
legs.
In addition to their distinctive legs, Munchkin is similar
to any other breed and can have a long or short coat of almost any color.
The standard of the breed is not fully formed, but there are
basic criteria:
- The head is wide with a smooth contour;
- A small nose with a bend;
- Ears are set wide;
- Eyes are big;
- The neck is strong and muscular;
- paws are short.
- Males of short-legged cats weigh from 3 to 5 kg, females from 2 to 4 kg.
The personality of Munchkin Cat
Despite their small growth, Munchkin is very playful, loves
to run, hunt, play with toys, and at the same time easily trained. They are very
sociable and loving cats, adore the company, including children, dogs, and other
pets.
They sit on their hind legs like rabbits to better
disassemble and understand what caught their attention.
They can't jump from the floor to the top of the bookcase,
but they will demonstrate their intelligence by finding a way that will allow
them to get to the right place.
Common Diseases in Munchkin Cat
The Munchkins are usually healthy, but being a somewhat
young breed, health problems can still appear. Surprisingly, they did not find
a problem with their back, given that it is a breed of short-legged cats.
A fat cat is not a healthy cat, especially with a breed of
this type of physique. Therefore, it is important not to overfeed and maintain
a nutritious diet for optimal condition.
Munchkin may have typical health problems for domestic cats,
namely:
- hypochondroplasia
- Hyperthyroidism
- pancreatitis
- Lordosis
- uremia
- lymphosarcoma
