Kurilian Bobtail
History
Kurilian bobtail (not to be confused with Kurilsky) - the tailless breed of cats native to Russia. Traditionally, their place of residence is the Karelian isthmus, and for the first time, they were noticed by a man in the area of Lake Ladoga. Yes, you understood correctly - they were not brought out by any breeders, these cats are aboriginal and have an ancient history of origin.
Until now, no one can say when exactly the bobtails appeared in the territory of the Karelian isthmus and other related areas, but scientists suggest that many centuries ago their closest relatives could be Norwegian forest cats. Somehow in the process of development and resettlement in new territories, Norwegian got to the territory of modern Russia or the then Kievan Rus.
The short tail gene is dominant, and originated among cats living in the area, spontaneously, exactly when. It was also transmitted, spontaneously, and still, cats with tails about 5 centimeters long, can be found in local settlements. In fact, the breed of Karelian bobtail is quite rare, and if it were not for the locals and their belief that a cat with a short tail brings happiness to the house, they would be much less. Moreover, according to some experts, they could disappear altogether.
The Kotofei Tribal Commission began to create the first standard of the Kurilian Bobtail breed in 1987. To do this, cats were taken from the nursery Lilia Dvoryanovich. Unfortunately, at the time of recognition in the World Federation of Cats, the kennel Dvornovich no longer existed, and by the mid-2000s there were no cats left alive from this kennel. Now there are only 2 breeding kennels - "North-western Sky" in Karelia, and KLK "Kotofey" (although it is not a specialized nursery breed, it is engaged in breeding and these cats).
