History of Selkirk Rex Cat
Selkirk Rex is a breed with an unusual coat texture. These
are curly cats, which, however, differ from a similar breed. Devon rex.
They arose as a result of a mutation that occurred accidentally, naturally,
therefore, strictly speaking, they cannot be fully attributed to artificially
bred breeds.
This breed is relatively expensive, however, you will be
surprised to learn that it originated from a cat found in an animal shelter in
1987, in Montana, USA. Breeder Persian cats Jerry Newman drew
attention to such an unusual cat, especially given the fact that the other 5
kittens had the usual straight long hair.
Of course, Jerry took the unusual kitten, naming the little cat Miss De Pesto. When she grew up to a year and 2 months, she crossed her with a black Persian cat and got six kittens.
Three of them had the same curly
coat as Miss De Pesto, so this gene was dominant. Jerry was inspired and
decided to continue the breeding program, literally creating a new breed from
scratch thanks to pure chance - a find in a shelter for homeless cats.
She named the breed Selkirk, in honor of her stepfather, which, by the way, is a unique feature, because the breed is named after a person. Later, in order to diversify the gene pool, the breeding program was added Persians, exotic and British.
It was thanks to the
dominant gene that the Selkirk Rex breed quickly received official status.
Selkirk Rex cats were recognized by the International Cat Association and the
American Cat Fanciers Association in the 1990s, the CFA began registering Selkirk’s
in 1992, and the Cat Fanciers Association in 2000.
