Egyptian Mau
History/profile of Egyptian Mau
It is believed that one of the oldest domesticated breeds of
cats was the Egyptian Mau, which is associated with a spotted subspecies of
wild African cats. This cat was revered as a deity, protected by laws, and
mummified after death in ancient Egypt. Hieroglyphics on the walls of tombs in
pyramids dating back more than 4000 years depict a domesticated spotted cat.
Today this breed is known as a silver cat, which was given
to the Russian princess Natalia Trubetskaya when she lived in Rome. When she
moved from Rome to the United States in 1956, she took with her a gifted
spotted cat named Baba and her two descendants.
Trubetskaya wanted to make sure that the Egyptian Mau
survived as a breed, so she wrote the standard of the breed and began to breed
cats called the nursery Fatima.
Egyptian Mau as a breed was recognized in 1968 by the
Federation of Cat Lovers and then by the Cat Lovers Association in 1977. The
importation of new Egyptian Maus in the 1980s and then in 1991 increased the
gene pool of the breed. Today, the breed is recognized by the majority of cat
associations.
Egyptian Mau is one of the 20 popular breeds listed by the
Association of Cat Lovers.

Common diseases
It is considered to be one of the healthiest breeds of cats
in the world and they do not have any specific health problems for the breed.
However, like many others breeds of cats, Mau is predisposed to a viral
infection known as the feline leukemia virus.
The leukemia virus is a viral infection that causes anemia,
weight loss, and death in cats. A cat of any breed that has not been vaccinated
can contract this deadly viral infection. However, many studies have shown that
some cat breeds are more susceptible to the cat leukemia virus. These include
breeds such as Burmese, Persian, and of course the Egyptian Mau.
Vaccination is therefore mandatory for disease prevention.
Be sure to keep an eye on your cat's weight gain, as obesity
will shorten her life and lead to diseases such as diabetes. If your cat is
gaining weight, discuss a suitable diet with your veterinarian.
The average life expectancy of an Egyptian mau is between 18
and 20 years, if properly cared for and fed with good quality food
corresponding to their age and needs.
